     @feinzer pleroma chats are a separate pleroma exclusive, theyre some weird custom websockets thing or something and direct messages are just posts that no one can see except you and the other person

     They aren't, you're thinking of shoutbox. They are regular AP objects with custom object type, sent and received through the same API.
