Seems like all new instances should at least be silenced by default until they prove themselves to be good Fedizens. Yes, it will make it harder to bootstrap new instances. The admin can always go out and specifically request to be unsilenced. If they're known good actors, they will be successful. If they are not, then they should not be successful.
@kkarhan I don't think having extremely low friction for creating and bootstrapping new instances makes any long-term difference to decentralization. To provide significant benefit, an instance has to be able to grow at least a little and stick around. If a little bit of additional pain at the beginning keeps someone from starting an instance, they were unlikely to make it in the long term anyway, and we're protecting their potential users and the Fediverse itself from the harm they would have caused.
@freakazoid personally, I'm against that since that would accelerate oligopolic instances and remove the added benefit of decentralization.
What we could do - similar to eMail - is demand that #MAstodon sites have a proper #CodeOfConduct as well as #Contact field that allows anonymous reporting.
Another thing that might get common are instance blocklists [similar to #Spamhaus' #DROP] to filter out nefarious instances...
@freakazoid "You can only speak publicly if the king approves of what you say privately"
...and which king should have the choice to unsilence?
>Yes, it will make it harder to bootstrap new instances.
So you are de facto asking to make the fediverse less competitive with centralized, corporate, highly censored services like facebook, tiktok and birdsite
@marine@PhoenixWaifu@freakazoid@jeffcliff i fucking hate how people prefer to depend on a high authority to curate their online experience and all, rather than give that agency to their users. What do we get as a result? A society that gets increasingly more fragile and gay
@jeffcliff@freakazoid they ironically want to turn the fediverse into a twitter clone where they have all the control like they did before musk bought twitter.
@PhoenixWaifu@MischievousTomato@freakazoid@jeffcliff yeah, i just started this and the only people i’m defederating outright are pedophiles. otherwise, we can discuss it as an instance if we think others need to get blocked (though ideally, if any more blocking happens, it’ll be single bad actors, not entire instances.)
Some example responses to this post from other servers, all because someone on a server that associates with them (and which I am disappointed to discover retro.social did not already have blocked) replied to it.
