This is interesting. Square is reporting big losses, and it's no surprise. They were excited about FF16's sales on the first week, but it plummeted 90% afterwards. It was not the system seller Sony/SQE thought it would be, and they had to fight Microsoft in court.
Microsoft gave up the console wars (Xbox is technically doing worse than PS), but Microsoft is now getting GamePass on pretty much everything. Sony does not have anything over MS nor Nintendo.
@SenSen_93 That's the wild part, isn't it? Everyone is just keeping up "no no they're blasting xbox out of the water, it was a financial hit!"
...and then the numbers come out. Either these games are not selling as they should, or the cost of making the game and running the company is way too high.
@Cayhr Pretty much. Bad enough 16 hasn't met lofty expectations of Square, but man. Their gacha department gonna get hurt even more. Killed multiple games off last year alone and made a shitty Mario Kart clone they stopped supporting F2P. Amusing, really.
@Meemoo@Cayhr Fuck Square when I think FF I want a cozy jrpg not some character action game. Like seriously who the fuck asked for this. I don't have ps5 but even if it were on pc I probably wouldnt bother anyway
@Pikika Yes, but the difference between Xbox and PS is that Microsoft has pivoted towards GamePass domination. The Xbox falling behind is intentional. Sony is trying to fight a losing battle with the PS, because while MS gathers more and more games and customers with GamePass, Sony continues failing to try to convince people they have the better deal. @Kyonko802@Ronnie21093
@Cayhr@Pikika@Kyonko802@Ronnie21093 exactly. Microsoft is not trying to merely get a piece of the pie but own the whole restaurant. make people use game pass on either xbox or windows with cheap prices until they are depended on it like they are now with steam. then pull the rug from under them with cloud only gaming. want to release a game? too bad microsoft not only owns the store and platform but also whole distribution channel.
@DarkMahesvara That's one of my concerns. I do not want my games dependent on GamePass. Even Steam is a problem because it's technically DRM but at least there is an offline mode. I don't know how GamePass works and I'm not about to just hand over everything to Microsoft just because Sony is losing.
@ChristiJunior@Cayhr They were excited about FF16's sales on the first week, but it plummeted 90% afterwards.AHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA
No, but seriously...
A— No, for real. A friend just told me Red Dead Redemption is coming to the Switch. I wonder how fugly it's gonna look; but at least I won't have to consider buying an Xbox 360 (those are suspiciously cheap here). The game won't even run on the best PS3 emulator. Now I'll be able to be a cowboy.
If only Square had released FF on Nintendo like back on the SNES days, this wouldn't have happened. But I guess they don't like money.
@Meemoo@Cayhr if i had the money, i would buy a ps5 because of ff16, but i don't. you're definitely right. people buy for value these days because they have to, which i think is why buying a PC has been rising in popularity. it's going to be more expensive than a console, but the amount of games you can play with it and the things you can do with it far surpasses any console that has ever existed or ever will exist.
steam DRM is optional. for some games you only need it to install then.
steam certainly is not perfect but i don't think people realize how incredibly lucky we are its valve and not MS, EA or Ubisoft. Gaben has seen this coming decades ago since he literally worked for them in the 90s watching the Internet Explorer market abuse. this is why they pump so much into Linux gaming and proton/wine to get as far away from windows before the trap shuts close.
@DarkMahesvara Yeah, Steam's efforts are certainly not to be underappreciated. I say Steam is technically DRM because it's tied to an acc whether you can play offline or not. @Kyonko802@Pikika@Ronnie21093
