   I've taken out a VPS from Ionos (formerly 1and1). It has 1 vCore, 1 GB RAM, 10GB SSD, unlimited traffic, root access, and a choice of distros, including Debian, Ubuntu & CentOS. Plesk is also offered free, but, I've not used it.

   All for the ridiculously cheap price of £1 (£1.20 incl. VAT) per month. At this price it would be rude not to test it, which is what I'm doing.

   The spec is limited, but, I can think of hundreds of uses at this price point.

     Beware, the speed is advertised as "up to 1 Gbit/s". Those first two words may be crucial.

     Before (I think a year ago) it was different at least there was "only" 400 Mbit/s instead of 1 Gbit/s network speed.

     TBH I much prefer Postgresql, and I notice that is supported for Nextcloud. Not sure if it is less or more resource-hungry than MySQL/MariaDB.

     @fitheach @trebach you can always run the database on a different machine. I haven't compared mysql to postgres on a bench, but I have run several nextcloud instances using postgres and the database never seemed particularly starved or hungry.

     Hmmm. Would the above specs be sufficient to run a personal, single-user Nextcloud instance. Just for the purposes of mobile syncing, and, maybe, irregular file sharing.

     Thoughts?

     @fitheach You also have to consider the resources of the dependencies. Apache/nginx don't use too many resources, but MySQL does.

     I have managed hosting and had to abandon hosting Nextcloud on it. It would crap out midway through an upgrade because MySQL operations would time out

     Good idea. If the DB seems to be draining resources I could move it to a new VPS. I also have some servers with existing Postgresql installs.

     Of course I don't do any of that because I'm terrified of breaking everything again.
     See when they announce PHP upgrades are required I break out in a sweat ;)

     @Jkp @fitheach @tkenben You could do a simple Nextcloud on that no problem. Unless you were using the desktop sync utility, just use sqlite as the database to save memory, but postgresql would happily live in that space too. Strip down a standard install though to give you most room. The thing you will notice most is the single core you have rather than memory. Use pgp-fpm with ondemand for extra slickness and maybe lighttpd, as I do, rather than apache/nginx. 2p worth

     At first I thought, how the **** would I know and then I remembered the stats screen so I'll get back to you on this.
     I believe @withaveeay could also wade in here with streamlining advice since he runs nextcloud on a Pi!

     I know, that's where I stalled 🤷
     Don't think my nextcloud would play well with that.
     Redicilous when you consider my first computer had a magnificent 256mb of RAM 😁
