     Except it is not democratic.

     Democracy is rule by majority.

     Consensus is "if no one has any objections". And in healthy fields of science, there are always objections, so nothing is ever "settled".

     @niclas consensus science is a popularity contest for unscientific ideas that can't be proven (or more importantly disproven). It gives people confidence to say "all of us serious scientists agree that ..." and anyone who pushes back is supporting conspiracy theory and anti science.
