Democracy is rule by majority.
Consensus is "if no one has any objections". And in healthy fields of science, there are always objections, so nothing is ever "settled".

It gives people confidence to say "all of us serious scientists agree that ..." and anyone who pushes back is supporting conspiracy theory and anti science. -
