   I'm starting to realize that fedi can be accurately analyzed through historical materialism, which is kind of absurd but I think a lot of things about it make more sense with it in mind that fedi is basically in a feudal stage while corporate social media (and the internet as a whole) is basically in the capitalist stage. and I think that's largely enabled, if not determined outright, by the very structure of the internet having hierarchy codified into it and also being mostly a free-for-all for privatization thus far in its history rather than being treated as a public utility

     That still has hierarchy, and even worse, a complete deviation of motivation between host and user.
