It’s over
They are going to use kites to sail cargo ships.
This is the stupidest damn thing I’ve ever heard
- luithe likes this.
- Machismo repeated this.

@Tony maybe they could build the ships out of a renewable resource, say like wood for example?
-
@bronze @Tony The amount of wooden sailboats needed to cover even a fraction of international shipping will destroy a good percentage of forest worldwide.
Steel is an almost infinitely reusable resource. Just need to melt it down and recast it to remove the built up metal fatigue
-
@Tony why is that stupid? as stated in the video, sails have worked for millenia. i don't know the physics of it, but it would make sense if the traditional fixed sail pole design doesn't work with our massive steel ships of today. also the kite design is a drop-in solution compatible with any boat without forcing them to remove cargo. from a surface level viewpoint this is great engineering

For one, this has already been done (see ships from literally all of recorded history).
It’s a stupid idea because cargo ships are huge and heavy. I doubt a sail would be effective/more cost effective than diesel engines.
It’s like wind farms - sound great but slaughter birds and the huge ass fan blades have like no way to be disposed so they literally burry them.
Sounds cool but there are probably a ton of unintended consequences. Seems to me like some thunburg solution no one will actually ever do.
