Just the Concealment provided by a Trench is enough to make you not want to get close with armor... even infantry honestly, but armor would die trying to do WW1 French style attacks (using tanks as cover) since any soldier can be armed with a HEAT warhead, be a rocket, ATGM, or even a grenade.
