The Campaigns of Emperor Majorian 457-461AD, the last attempt to restore the Western Empire. Majorian's exact age is unknown but he is described as a young man and highly skilled general. Majorian deposed the preceding Gallo-Roman Emperor Avitus, who had been appointing Gauls into previously exclusively Roman held positions of government. Upon the deposition of their ally Avitus, the German and Gallic Foederati rebelled. Almost all Roman territory beyond Italy seemed lost.
Majorian refused to accept the Empires fate and launched one final great campaign to restore the Western Empire. Victorious in every battle, he was murdered in a coup by his old friend and Germano-Roman general Ricimer in 461AD, believed to be somewhere in his thirties. The Empire fell 15 year later.
“Majorian presents the welcome discovery of a great and heroic character, such as sometimes arise, in a degenerate age, to vindicate the honor of the human species.” — Edward Gibbon
