I nearly fucked myself up good this morning when the axe ricocheted off of the round I was chopping and hit my foot. On the one hand a sharp blade wouldn't have ricocheted but on the other thankfully the axe was dull enough to just break the shoe string. Before I started I checked the edge and said "fuck it good enough" like a fool. After I hit my foot I sharpened it up.
Wearing boots for boots type work is also advisable. -

Alpha Kilo Papa (alphakilopapa@noagendasocial.com)'s status on Wednesday, 26-Jul-2023 21:17:39 JST Alpha Kilo Papa @thatguyoverthere I always wear boots. The one time I didn't I put a rusty deck nail straight through my foot. Got lucky, didn't hit bone, tendon or nerves somehow.

Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Wednesday, 26-Jul-2023 21:19:40 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @Alphakilopapa I am currently hunting for new boots. The soles fell off the last pair, and 5-11 tactical doesn't carry them anymore. I am sick of always needing to adapt to the latest trends when looking for footwear. Why can't anyone just make the same boots for 30 years or something. Always gotta be some new material or gimmick. I just want good boots that last. -

Advanced Disposal bought me a pair when I was a weighmaster. $350, 4 or 5 years ago and I'm actually wearing them today... lol I've destroyed 3 other sets of boots. These won't die.

Looks like they carry them at a store not too far from here. My last pair lasted me 2 or 3 years of daily [ab]use. I wouldn't mind 5 years. -
Kek Kerel (kekkerel@freespeechextremist.com)'s status on Wednesday, 26-Jul-2023 21:46:52 JST Kek Kerel @thatguyoverthere @Alphakilopapa I just use a hammer and a wedge.
I know that I'll be justifiably called a wimp, but there's just an acceptable risk of injury in chopping wood otherwise.
I have too many things waiting on me to get injured like that.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

It didn't feel particularly sharp and I knew better. I guess I was just anxious to get started.
I'm not sure where my wedges are, but as long as the axe is sharp it tends to cut right through if I hit the rounds from the side. That does increase the risk of a ricochet if your aim is not perfect, but with a good grip and sharp axe it hasn't been much of a problem. I can appreciate avoiding injury. TBH I feel like the hammer mill and chainsaw have a better chance of eating me alive than the axe, but after today's little slip up maybe I should show the axe a bit more respect.
I remember when I was a kid watching some kind of dramatization (supposedly real life event) with my dad where someone cut someone else's fingers off with an axe. Not sure why anyone would ever trust someone enough to hold the thing they are cutting for them. that's madness to me. -
Alpha Kilo Papa (alphakilopapa@noagendasocial.com)'s status on Thursday, 27-Jul-2023 01:38:57 JST Alpha Kilo Papa @thatguyoverthere Yeah chain saws make me a little nervous. Don't even bother asking me to go near a woodchipper... I'm not great with an axe as I don't use them often. I've used a log splitter thousands of times since childhood. My dad would always say to me "don't cut your fingers off. Guess what he did last year with the log splitter...

Was that 2 fingers lost and one reattached? Thankfully I have all 10 fingers still in spite of using lots of fast moving saws over the years. I hope I can keep them for the rest of my life.
I actually have pants that are supposed to protect your legs from the chainsaw, but I haven't been wearing them for the past few weeks. I take my time when I am using the chainsaw and make sure I have a plan before I start and am 100% focused. I also hit the bar lock every time I'm not actively cutting material. It's second nature at this point.
I have 2 woodchippers. One is definitely not designed with safety in mind. The hopper is only about 3 inches deep and right below that you can see the hammers spinning. The other one is newer and definitely designed to make hurting yourself more difficult. The hopper is long enough that even with my arm all the way in there is still a good 2ft gap to the plate. you would have to dive in or open the chamber while the blades were spinning to be at risk for serious injury. I guess you could also reach into the outlet and mangle yourself pretty good, but it is much safer than the other one. I still use both of them because they do different things. The hammer mill is more dangerous, but it also doesn't need regular sharpening and only ejects material once it's a certain size (based on a screen you can replace for different size chips). It is designed to mulch small sticks and leaves in place, but it takes it's time. The other one shoots the stuff out pretty quick and you can change the trajectory so it shoots right next to it or further away. You can even fit a wheelbarrow under the outlet and catch the mulch to put it somewhere else entirely if you want. -

Shortly after I smacked my shin while chopping something down. It hurt like hell but I ate it and didn't say anything to my dad because swinging a machete was awesome and I didn't want him to take it away from me. -
Alpha Kilo Papa (alphakilopapa@noagendasocial.com)'s status on Thursday, 27-Jul-2023 01:57:27 JST Alpha Kilo Papa @thatguyoverthere I did the same to my hand with my first pocket knife 5 minutes after getting it lol
He split his hand and the base of his middle finger. They tried to save it but eventually just cut off his middle finger, removed the bone from his hand and sewed it all together.

The only problem with power tools is that how quickly they can do things you don't want them to do is much quicker than you can get out of the way sometimes. I appreciate their capabilities, but I really hope I never end up losing part of my body to expedience.
