@thatguyoverthere I have a strong suspicion NK isn't nearly as bad as our media propagandizes it to be. Not to say it's some paradise, and obviously they're weird about photos and suspicious of tourists and such, but I sort of wonder if maybe it's just a regular place with a pretty strict authoritarian government.
@BowsacNoodle@thatguyoverthere One of the problems we have here is that sometimes people abandon DPRK and they want to be accepted as a refugee and they know our media loves sensational stories about north korea, so they make up ridiculous stories to improve their chances of getting to stay. and those stories are presented uncritically.
I am friends with three people that have independently traveled to North Korea. one of them had the privilege of traveling to places that foreigners usually don't get to see. I am told that the people and their daily lives are pretty normal.
I think the thing about authoritarian countries though is if you follow the rules your life will be pretty normal but the second you argue with an incompetent government official your life is made so miserable that you have to flee. So I think probably people flee DPRK have a reason to even though a lot of people there probably just don't make waves and don't have big problems.
@Moon@thatguyoverthere >if you follow the rules your life will be pretty normal but the second you argue with an incompetent government official your life is made so miserable that you have to flee Oh so it's just like America except we let the free market use "employers" for that task instead of appointed officials?
