   in 1969, when they put people on the moon, 1939 was 30 years ago.

     @thor yes contemporary is another word that is also subjective. It really depends on what you are talking about. If you are comparing something from the 90s that has changed a lot (vidyagames) to it's 21st century equivalent then you can't really call it modern, but if it's something that hasn't changed much (hammer) then modern can cover a much larger timespan. Also if you are talking about a technology that really became popular in the 90s and has steadily increased since then (cellphones) then it can still qualify (as long as you aren't trying to compare to more modern tech).

     @thatguyoverthere historians have a date. but that's not how the word is commonly used.

     in common usage, "modern" means "contemporary"

     @thatguyoverthere if my recollection serves me right, anything post-1400s is "modern" if you ask a historian.

     @thatguyoverthere ask an ART historian however, and they say the modern era ended around the 1950s and after that, we have entered the era of post-modernism
