   Something I realized is that as much as people claim shows today are "degenerate" I think a lot of shows and anime now are way less sexual and/or perverse.

     @gol_d_berg @Twoinchdestroya Hmm, maybe? In Naruto, the "pervy sage" trains Naruto under the condition that he promises to transform into a naked female version of himself. It was obviously a joke (not for approval), done for laughs to show us how this otherwise incredible man can succumb to his own crippling and human vices. I think we all get what was going on here, it's not flying over kids heads. We don't really see characters like this today, whereas the "pervy old man who is also an expert you have to work with" was a pretty common character before.
     
     I don't think something like this could get made today, especially in a show targeted at pre-teens, and if they tried it would probably be forced to heavily imply that Naruto was actually trans.

     @Elliptica @Twoinchdestroya do you see a difference between the stock japanese character of "pervy old sage" and straight-up telling kids "i was born a boy but i'm actually a girl, my pronouns are she/her!"
     
     one displays and reinforces what is normal, exaggerating it for comic effect. it is normal for men to like hot chicks, especially high-T men. the comedy is that the dignity of the old sage is belied by his shameless thirst
     
     propagandizing kids with gender trends is comparatively sterile visually, but significantly more perverted and destructive psychologically
     
     it's a broader cultural trend you see in media and irl behavior from what i can see. i watched some older stuff from the 90s and 80s and it was more straightforward: men want women, men hit on women, women like the attention and/or reject the men, totally normal. if the movies are telling the truth, it used to be more normal to hit on women and they would accept or reject gracefully
     
     now people are sterile, avoiding direct sexual displays of interest, but also more disgusting, willing to talk about and adopt all sorts of socially approved perverted identities and sexual acts
     
     grooming a child into voluntarily ending their genetic line is more transgressive than any number of pervy old men lusting after hot chicks, especially when the old men are made the butt of the joke every time, reinforcing that it is correct for the young warriors to earn the girl, and for old men to act with dignity

     @Twoinchdestroya It could be that most of it flies over my head, but what I think I see more of now are things like Francois from Dr Stone. "We inserted a non gendered character into the story. wowowowowow!" It's more annoying than anything.

     @Twoinchdestroya But I don't think these sorts of innuendoes would fly today. It seems rarer, and whenever I see anyone talking about something like it today, it's usually something like "Spongebob got eaten by Mrs. Puff, this is a reference to vore". It might be, but it goes over most peoples heads.

     Maybe in 10 years everyone will know about vote, scat, and furries, and a new level of degeneracy will arise.

     @Twoinchdestroya I'm not 100% sure, I was more wondering what other people thought. But at the same time, it feels true to me. When I got back and watch older anime or even western shows, they seem to have a lot more crude humor, such as the "carpet eaters" joke from a cartoon network show.

     @gol_d_berg @Twoinchdestroya That makes sense. I think you are correct about the cultural trend regarding how we approach and handle intimacy or flirtation, which I think is really taboo to see these days. Things like naked guys riding around on their bikes at a pride parade is considered normal and fine because it's not explicitly sexual, some wrinkly old naked gay guy on a bike has a very limited appeal, while cute girls wearing bikinis to promote a video game is crossing the line.
     
     What I'm reacting to more, probably, is that everything feels sanitized today. Any sort of normal sexuality of affection has to be hidden from public view, unless it's gay, restricted to porn websites which makes a mockery of it. Every character is supposed to be a role model, so they can't do anything wrong. Inserting a tranny character bothers me, but I also don't think come across as strictly inappropriate without context (If a mom walks by she wont think anything of it). The "sanitation" issue is a really crappy trend, because people don't really like it I think. People's favorite character from shows like My Hero Academia are guys who who want to kill everyone for fun, or the guy who practices eugenics and beats his wife until she became a schizo, not All Might and his wannabe janny sidekick.
