Bruh, I could've told you that without needing a big study
I see what it's trying to do, but unless the end result is free access to rom or a universal site that sells roms as is and everyone is strong armed into participating whether they like it or not, then it's entirely pointless
@coolboymew i wonder, if we preserve games that are abandonware... EXCEPT for nintendo games, we could erase nintendo from cultural history, since they won't be able to download their own roms they failed to preserve for rereleases
@icedquinn agree, but 40 years is still too much for legit preservation. It is entirely true that a lot of these shit would be lost without having the fans breaking the laws and distributing copies and something has to be done about that
@hj@coolboymew I think Nintendo uses ROMs for other sites because I don't think Nintendo actually made their own ROM format for emulation. NES games are actually multiple programs stored on multiple chips.
@Skoll3@coolboymew film actually has less protection than books in the berne convention. they only got 20 years with no extensions. books were 20 with an option to pay for another 20.
@coolboymew a lot of this stuff is already lost media, in many cases with no way to recover it
especially in like Japan where they were cranking it out by the truckload and their archive-fu has been notably weak for a long time
never forget that Squeenix had to reverse-engineer the code and assets from the commercial release version of motherfucking Kingdom Hearts in order to make remasters because they lost the source materials for their biggest franchise ever
I don't think old console games are in any danger at all really. It's very easy to download an entire rom set and make hundreds of copies. Newer games are much more at risk with cloud services, huge file sizes, online requirements and DRM in every release.
@coolboymew Yea, you CAN emulate it, but it's not the same as the original on a modern display. Unless you buy that special type of LCD display. I don't remember whether mine got sold in a yard sale, or burned in a fire, but last time I remember it was in near mint condition. The hardware wasn't designed well so a working one would be extremely rare today. (I would think, I haven't checked ebay)
