I sometimes wonder if people start those insipid YouTube "couples doing stuff" channels because they're recreating what would have been their local community through internet parasocial means. Which is to say... they put themselves in the reverse panopticon of their audience's watchful gaze and they have the assurance that the other partner will do their best to keep the relationship intact lest they destroy their brand and lose their audience. Just as the village of old would have had a keen interest in keeping the charming newly married couple together.
It's really good too because the audience only sees them at their "best" putting on their little performance. They don't bouts of passive aggression. They don't get to talk to one party unbeknownst to the other. One of the partners in the couple won't be in PonyPanda's DMs soliciting him.

idk its possible that church just played a similar role as the pefrormative space for monogamy 'traditionally'. theres always something going on behind the curtain and most people are fascinated with speculating what it is eg celebrity gossip
