ball-and-cup or yo-yo? Reddit opines:
>an easy trick with a yo-yo looks very hard. A very hard trick with a ball-and-cup looks easy.
as expected from reddit, his goal is to show off, superficially, to other people. To amaze those who don't know any better. To invest as little personal effort for the most efficient return of social esteem - likes, or upvotes.
therefore, the anti-reddit path is to prefer the ball-and-cup precisely because it its tricks are much harder. The results are more satisfying, and are satisfying on their own and in private, without a social requirement to bedazzle the ignorant. And whereas the yo-yo-ist will prefer to hide his skills like a magician, the ball-and-cupper easily shares the toy, impressing with substance when the trick is not so easily duplicated!

Q: but what if I think it's shameful to invest skill into tricks with a toy?
A: life isn't an RPG. You don't have a limited amount of skill points, and a level cap. Use some spare time when you have it.
A: however this question also separates the yo-yo-ist from the ball-and-cupper: if the audience sneers at skill with a toy, then the yo-yo-ist has nothing to say against that, and moreover is denied the sole benefit of the skill investment. And what can he say? That legend says that the yo-yo was a comically impractical weapon that no military or bandit uses today? Meanwhile the ball-and-cup is satisfying on its own - the audience can deny no benefit. And, this can be demonstrated: "if you mock me, then take it and try to get the ball into the cup!" The heckler will smirk, and then make a show of rolling his eyes and not caring as he fails, but then the first time the ball lands neatly into the cup, the heckler's eyes will widen into plates. Though mostly an accident, though a feat of no skill, though hard to repeat - the ball is in the cup! How satisfying! And there is a faint sting of regret that the ball must be removed from the cup before further attempts can be made.
