   I've been using #Mastodon for a while now, coming up two years, I think. I switched instance late last year. But I have to be honest, I don't fully understand why I see the posts I do. Timelines, I get that. All good - home, local, etc. No problem.

   But why is it that if I view someone's profile, on a different instance, I'm told they've made, for example, 69 posts but I only see three, even if I look at Posts & Replies.

   Any link to explanations is fine!

     The reason for that is because most instances, by default, do not backfill posts, especially if the instance you're interacting with is older than the one you are on.
     
     There is a workaround. View the post remotely, and if you want to interact with it locally, copy its external link and paste it into search. Your instance will then download a local copy.
