    Today I got my ration for the food charity for the next two weeks.
    This time they didn't get diddled by proprietary software so they had a bit of food for me :)

      @icedquinn @mangeurdenuage obv. You need milk, but it's an easy way to make some of that stretch a bit further (assuming a half gallon of milk is cheaper than a half gallon of yogurt)

      Yogurt is pretty easy to make. Only about 4 hours with thermophilic strains which are commonly used in commercial yogurt. Mesophillic cultures take a bit longer but are even simpler to culture on your own (just put it in the cupboard for a day).

      @mangeurdenuage @icedquinn @ringo that is unfortunate. I think any cows milk will technically work as long as it hasn't been uht pasteurized (it's unlikely the stuff in those individual danone cups is from grass fed beef anyway).

      @ringo @icedquinn @mangeurdenuage if they are plain yogurt (not flavored) and they don't smell off or have things growing in them they are probably fine to use (worst case is you waste a half gallon of milk). I don't ever end up with yogurt lasting past it's best by date around here.

      i also have yogurts in the fridge that are unopened and varying months past expiration, but figure they're good for something.

      i generally go by , is it swelling and sealed? toss.

      otherwise open it stirr it and eat.

      although raw milk is different entirely.

      even sometimes as early as 2weeks past date, opened shook drank, and PFFFFFFT!!!! nearly vomit kind of a thing.

      The only stuff I can buy nowadays.
      A bit more than a year ago I was able to buy fresh milk directly to a farmer but he closed sadly.
