we're working on a new casual/beginner-friendly alternative to the sway tiling desktop for MNT Reform and Pocket Reform based on wayfire, sfwbar and nwggrid. what do you think?
@nihilazo and both of these DEs are too complex for one person (like me) to debug/patch. wayfire on the other hand is quite simple, based on the stable wlroots and the other components are like lego on top
@lina we only really support things that work with wayland, as X is abandonware. but i think there's something like dwm now. we usually ship sway which is fast and minimal
@mntmn nice, it looks okay I would like to see how dwm would look like on the Pocket, sometimes the most simple suckless stuff is all you need Also the performance will be better on dwm than on kde/gnome as it's just a tiling wm
@mntmn hm, having not actually seen the pocket’s screen in person, I feel like the more visual design could be a bit too much clutter for such a small space
@vagrantc we will still ship sway as a default for people who feel comfortable with tiling and keyboard shortcuts. the customized wayfire DE is basically a stand-in for something like xfce4, which is not yet available for wayland. gnome and kde are imho too complex for low-power machines.
Been using #i3 and lately #Sway for years, which mostly work fine for me, though currently exploring switching out bits of my desktop environment, so curious to see how this develops!
Given the sheer number of desktop environments out there, what are the main goals of this new one that might set it apart?
I noticed wayfire is already packaged in #Debian, but I do not see sfwbar or nwggrid. I don't see any of these packages in #Guix
