     Scott Adams is the kind of old guy who hasn’t worked a REAL job in almost half a century, he might have worked at a car wash in high school, or maybe at one point spent a summer roofing. In all his years, though, Scott hasn’t truly DONE anything that sustains society, it’s nothing but all these optional, silly things like software, comic strips and licensed mugs. He hasn’t sustained infrastructure, alleviated suffering, educated the future - he’s just sold cheap chinese faff with surface-level workplace observations.

     But in his mind, the money that he’s made - both for himself and others - means that surely he’s a king of his own creation. He’s BUILT a kingdom all with his own two hands, he’s a hard worker, he knows all about life. All his success is richly deserved, a signifier of pure, unadulterated quality that seeps out of his…hahah…newspaper comic strip.

     I’ve worked with some celeb-types before, and something I noticed in a real hurry is that time always lets them build up a self-serving circle of devoted celebrants and fans. It’s why the girls are lonely spinsters and the guys boast an eternally creeping ego

     Over time they withdraw into this group of yes-men and get further out of synch with the world around them. Once something negative - and often well deserved - cracks through that cocoon they lose their shit just like this.

Boomer Canadian woman wrote a newspaper comic about her family and when they divorced she edited old comics to make the character based on her husband more of an asshole and gradually wrote him out of new strips.
     
     It was a quite obnoxiously preachy, liberal comic, more in the "gays and retards deserve respect and rape is bad" way rather than the "women's lib" way that Cathy is. The author has said that eggless career women are selfish wastes of life (and writes them that way), which is weird when she most of what she wrote about was how miserable the life of a housewife is, but whatever.
