   @p hey buddy, how secure is matrix¿ Ive been against it till now but I downloaded fdroid last night and started a matrix account with syphon and downloaded SchildiChat from fdroid cause it was recommended so I'm using that to access my syphon account. I was considering deleting it as it's just as I expected, nothing I don't get from the fedi, but then I realized I was broken off from android and googles reach with it so it may be good to keep around to stay in contact with people if there's an Orwellian google crack down or one of those apps get nuked

     @Zerglingman @Soy_Magnus Apparently the DB records all join/part/away changes, which is fine until you try to federate the Matrix servers and then every status change from every user in every room on the big Matrix servers flood you. Or something like that, graf was talking about the travails.

     Join/part isn't a big deal because of persistent presence. Except when it's bridged everywhere and IRC floods the shit out of it.

     @ehhh @Soy_Magnus I have good computers and on none of them do I wish to burn CPU cycles doing something that was already lightweight in the 80s. There is no "good" client for Matrix, they are all total shit. Someone would have made a client that is not total shit if there was a reason to use Matrix and the API doesn't suck. Either there is no reason to use Matrix or the API sucks or both.

     It's a pain in the ass because Matrix makes the browser chug nutz so you don't want to leave it running in the background but there's the entire verification dance if you turn it off and back on. IRC is way nicer: I hate almost everything that Matrix does but IRC does not do.

     @Soy_Magnus I am not @p but I use matrix regularly. If you care about private convos actually being private, it's definitely better than discord or fedi dms.
     
     Keep track of and verify your own sessions. Should a new login take place, you will be notified on all existing verified sessions until you tell the server whether or not that is you.
     
     If you do not properly verify a session/a bad actor brute-forces your password, they can not read older encrypted messages.
