It's harder to make a living selling it. I make soap for my own use and as gifts for family, but I haven't really had the time to try and get it on shelves. I have talked to one store owner who seems open to it, but then you need to get into branding and labeling in order to be recognizable. I think I could probably find about 5 or 6 shops around here if I really looked that would even carry it. You can sell online, but you're either going to need to run your store somewhere like Etsy or Ebay, or you're going to have all of the challenges of getting a website of your own online and discovered by others (more branding fun).
Making soap is definitely easy and I would never discourage anyone from doing it, but as a primary business it seems cumbersome without a ton of profit to be gained once you account for time and materials. I still want to try and sell some soap just as a supplement to other income streams, but I don't think I can ever expect to rely on it as part of my income.
That actually brings up a good point though. You don't need a single stream of income. Right now I mainly rely on wages, but I have been considering trying a few other things out to add to it and maybe make me a little less dependent on j.o.b. money. -

Soap is possibly the easiest one of the all imo. You only need to read a bit about chemistry/human health. -

I think you can buy pretty much anything from china and make a profit reselling/relabeling it. -

I think if you could use all local ingredients that might be a bit more of a selling point for some people, but any craft bar you find is likely to be cold process (at least around me) so it's not really a stand out feature. One local soap maker I know makes "vegan" soaps so that's a niche that is working nicely for her, but I think we probably don't need two vegan soap makers around here. I also know a guy that was selling soap made from bear fat for a while (probably my favorite soap of all time), but I don't know if that was something he had regular access to or if it was more of a situation where he had to dispatch a bear on his farm and used the fat to make some soap.
I think the only way to make money with soap is going to be to target a niche outside of just "good soap", and regardless of what you do if you plan to sell in brick and mortar stores you're going to need some kind of recognizable label and brand name if you want people to buy your soap more than once.
When I was a kid, there was a small store that sold home made soap, and you actually cut your own bar which I thought was neat. If you ran your own store you could always do something like that, but you need a lot more than soap to fill a store. It would work for a booth at a farmers market or something though. -

There's a lot that one can point out to distinguish themselves, the easiest imo is still cold soap, it's the most economic/profitable solution as well as the highest healthy/quality soap you can do with only vegetable oils.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

I am saying that at least where I live, cold process soaps are what you tend to find when you look at local stores for soap. I know that if you go to craft stores you don't find much in the way of cold process supplies. Mostly they just have melt and pour type stuff, but I don't think anyone is fooling themselves into thinking those are good soaps worthy of sale (at least not that I've seen). -

> I don't think cold process is all that unique
It's like 99% of the market. In france at least. Places like France there's very few people who actually do it themselves, just in my region there's only one and she does it to avoid wasting the milk of her Mares.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

This.
And by people I mean industrial factories.

I don't mean the Walmart or Eagle/Giant/Whatever that is in my local area. I mean like the coffee shop that is run by a long time local who sells things like soap, books, and snacks from local businesses either that don't have their own store front or that sell their coffee and chocolate in return.
There aren't many of these types of businesses around (although there are enough that you can satisfy most needs through local businesses). They are far outnumbered by corporations that sell soaps using whatever industrial methods are used to make soaps. -
