German prison officials found that criminals who performed voluntary work were less likely to cause trouble in the prison and were less likely to be re-incarcerated. Rudolf Höss observed it first-hand during his own incarceration in the Brandenburg prison and during his tenure in the SS documented cases of early release from Auschwitz and successful integration into German society after prisoners were given regular, productive work tasks.
