It's cringey and shitty, and I'm sorry, but if you are amused by it, you are cringey and shitty too. It manages to be worse than SCP. Not to mention I've seen some stupid "neutral they/them" pronouns being used to refer to an entity "that is believed to be a female", so I have my doubts that this is really a "project that started on 4chan".
Either way, myhouse.wad is an awesome Doom map you should play. The Backrooms is a really shitty "creepypasta turned into autistic wiki" that you should avoid.
@supersid333@Suzu edgy teens and discord pedophiles, never forget that, i am convinced that all the cancer that keeps trying to bring back stuff like old creepypastas and other old internet stuff into fnf and backrooms-esque settings with an attempt to make something "scary" and "unsettling" is done first and foremost by discord pedophiles trying to entice teens into joining their shitty servers
@Suzu@lina Cool small concept, and I think some of the floors are neat ideas by themselves. But the whole thing reaks of edgy teens all vying for their piece of the spotlight, so it rubs me the wrong way.
@lina@supersid333 OK, I understand, but you can see that it's not a so compelling premise to create an entire subgenre around, right? I mean, "oh, you fell out of bounds, and now you are on a collection of interconnected rooms that are eerie and you are isolated" can be OK for a quick greentext story on /x, but it's not enough to warrant a wiki with people writing 200+ different floors with increasingly shittier concepts.
@Suzu@supersid333 the premise of the backrooms is precisely that it had nothing set in stone, if you were plopped in there, it'd be the fear of the unknown doing you in on top of the isolation and everything else, but as soon as discord pedophiles started shitting out crappy garry's mod nextbots that consist of scary PNGs that earrape you and put a scary PNG on your screen when they kill you it went to shit
@Suzu Welcome to any "open" horror idea that hits the mainstream.
That being said though, MyHouse.wad is a crazy impressive mod that makes phenomenal use of silent portals to fuck with the player, and it comes with a neat and compelling ARG that ends everything with a wholesome and satisfying conclusion. Guy who made it deserves to pat himself on the back.
@supersid333 Yeah, myhouse.wad is insane. I don't know much (or care actually) about the ARG, but the clever use of portals and door sliders to create that map was a work of art.
As for the Backrooms, despite the problem of it being a collaborative horror that hit the mainstream, the biggest problem is that the premise is very "meh", and there's not much to work with, desu, so I can't understand why it even gotten off the ground. At least SCP had an interesting premise, and it only turned to shit because it hit the mainstream and retards can't write a compelling story if their lifes depended on it.
@Suzu what do you mean by that? I have a vague memory of SCP being some sort of retarded spooky encyclopedia where everything in existence has a spooky definition.
@PonyPanda and oh, yeah, the thing about the Backrooms is that more or less the same thing that happened to SCP happened to it: someone on /x created a short greentext about you "noclipping" out of reality and finding yourself in a bunch of interconnected dull rooms reminiscent of an old office building, and then retards turned it into a wiki where they created literally hundreds of different "floors" for those backrooms each with a different theme, and it turns dull and stupid even quicker than SCP.
@PonyPanda there is a player-made map for Doom II that was released a few months ago called "myhouse.wad", and it's an impressive work that stretches the game's engine to it's limits and makes clever use of every function and trick the mapmaking software can provide to create an eerie and unsettling experience, it's awesome.
The Backrooms is a "collaborative horror story" that started on 4chan about "what would happen if you rest your back against a wall, no-clip through it and fall out of bounds", and it's absolutely shitty.
@Suzu take note of that line "nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz" this is just about the maddening nature of office buildings, we've all been in one of those. that is, except for the kids who read this and decided it was boring.
I remember playing spooky's jumpscare mansion because i've seen multiple asshats on jewtube gushing over it how its the best horror game ever created. ...I have rarely been so goddamn bored while playing a game. It's not scary, not fun. Just boring as hell. :angery:
The only good thing to come out of the backrooms shit is the liminal space twitter bots posting pictures that evoke a strange feeling of melancholy.
@PonyPanda@Suzu Oh hey, I recognize this object. "Item Description: A spear that, when thrown, pierces the heart of the nearest humanoid and extends several spikes from its blade afterward. Agents are to note that "the nearest humanoid" is typically the person who threw it. Date of Recovery: ██-██-████ Location of Recovery: █████, Ireland Current Status: In storage."
@Suzu@PonyPanda Things like a Smith and Wesson Magnum that says "Nice Shot" when firing a bullet from it's third chamber, or a clown statue that laughs in the dark that was noted as having been shot 15 times by an agent and is no longer anomalous as a result is way more enjoyable to me. https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/log-of-anomalous-items
@Suzu@PonyPanda The fun SCPs have always been the more strange and benign ones anyways. Who cares about the edgy donut steel OC killing machine when we can talk about the pills that cure all diseases, or the coffee machine that can dispense any liquid.
@PonyPanda technically it is, but retards started tried to one-up each other in how powerful and scary and mysterious their OC entries are, and now a ton of entries are shit like "and so bravo team entered [REDACTED] location where they found [REDACTED] and then [REDACTED]. Oh God there are guts and body parts everywhere due to [REDACTED]. - Cpt John [REDACTED] (Note from Dr. [REDACTED]: Cpt John was terminated because this SCP is super dangerous and must be kept super secret)"
@Suzu@Immahnoob@PonyPanda Just a Korean game companies' take on the idea of SCP. You're tasked with running a powerplant fueled by a resource that is created when people interact with Abnormalities. Chaos ensues as some of these Abnos are less friendly then others.
@supersid333@Suzu@PonyPanda I would avoid playing Lobotomy Corp itself and just go for Library of Ruina though. :nep_happy:
Lobotomy Corp is a bit too autistic and has very shitty controls and yet it asks for micromanagement. Although, it is a lot more epic if you know the lore of the abnormalities for the second game, which unfortunately misses on telling you anything about them. :angery:
@Immahnoob@supersid333@PonyPanda yeah, I have both on Steam. Played only Lobotomy for now, though, but I have a friend who keeps sperging about Ruina, looks pretty cool
@supersid333@Suzu@PonyPanda I'm still sperging about Ruina. :kekw: I can't wait for when you'll have Binah 1-2-3 blasting in the DnD campaign for that specific fight I have in mind.
