The original Super Mario RPG pushed the SNES to its limit with high quality pre rendered sprites. This new one looks like every generic new mario game where everything looks like a low quality fisher price. This is the issue with most 2D remakes imo the original games had high quality sprites which were the best you can do on the console but when remade it becomes very low quality "cartoony" sprites. Critics will pretend this is an improvement because "pixels le bad indie trash" and "its stylized" but it shows how low the expectations are for new 2D games. Even something like the Crash remakes (which looks visually better then this) look cheap and not like they are pushing the limits of modern graphics the same way the ps1 models were super expressive with lots of cartoon squash and squish.
Gamers will eat this up as running a SNES rpg and playing an OLD baby RPG is too hard for nu gamers. Like the last triple A 2D game to look incredible was Donkey Kong Country on Wii U.
