@lanodan But what if I didn't use Google Talk?
Actually, what even is it? Where in the graveyard does it go?
I remember when Hangouts was XMPP.
-
@Zerglingman Google talk as a timespan.
And I think Hangouts but XMPP was Google talk.
-
@lanodan There was definitely a time it was branded as Hangouts but you could connect with XMPP clients.
... But I don't know if it was via a specific gateway or just standard. I'm reasonably certain the former case happened; maybe the latter happened before that. I don't remember that far back.
Anyway I was that guy that showed up to LAN camp with pidgin already installed. :^)
-
@Zerglingman Heh, pidgin here was preinstalled so it's why I had an era where I used IRC without really knowing it was IRC (bless be irc:// links) as some forums where using that instead of an ass of a shoutbox.
-
@lanodan >mfw people say pidgin isn't a good irc client
>mfw the only issue I ever had was xdcc-related
>turned out the bot just so happened to be down at the moment I wanted something off it
-
@lanodan @Zerglingman
>shoutboxes
Oh man
-
@coolboymew @lanodan Bring back shoutboxes
.... To Italy
-
@Zerglingman @coolboymew Well, PleromaFE's local-only chat is called "Shoutbox" but it works too well to be nostalgia-fuel.
-
@lanodan @coolboymew Also I really can't be fucked trying to support it.
-
@Zerglingman Might be decent as an IRC client… I don't know I haven't used it as such for the past 10 years and I think it wouldn't scale to my IRC usage (I'm in 150+ channels, mostly idling but still).
-
@lanodan @Zerglingman Honestly, I keep forgetting that thing exists lol
-
@coolboymew @lanodan like shoutboxes are good for webcomics or whatever
I don't see the need here where we can just make hellthreads
-
@Zerglingman @lanodan yeah, and the fact that it resets after every reset is a problem and makes it kinda bad for that, so on SPC, at least, it's just a shitposting dump
-
@Zerglingman @coolboymew IRC is best for webcomics because you can join via MS Comic Chat.
-
@Zerglingman @lanodan I think the biggest issue is that any big bouts of instance problems will make the thing unusable because it disappears during instances problems, and then it gets wiped. So instances that had any sort of long lasting problems (like we've had on SPC, several times), ultimately ends up making the shoutbox unusable in the user's minds, so they end up forgetting about it
For Pleroma-FE, it's the floating button, but IMO it should be by default under the post box, and uncollapsed by default with options to collapse it, move it, resize it or outright remove it, maybe. Then, then it will actually be useful IMO. Also no chat wipe on reset and it reconnects automatically or with a button
That would make the shoutbox definitively way more useful
-
@coolboymew @lanodan haha @everyone go brrrrr
-
@coolboymew @Zerglingman Well the shoutbox should be more or less replaced by group chats…

-
@lanodan @coolboymew Revolver will support groups before pleroma
-
@coolboymew @lanodan @Zerglingman

@lanodan @Zerglingman I kinda don't like the chat function, it's like PMs, but under another interface? I kinda find it disruptive and I don't understand it. I'd rather use a client for chats
Like, if the built in chats were actually already a chat protocol (Matrix? IRC? Etc?) and that we can use our instance creds to login to them, but on mobile, I can just use a single app and on PC I can just use a Matrix/IRC/etc client that I like instead of using it on Pleroma-FE then maybe, that'd be absolutely fantastic, otherwise, in my honest opinion, I don't see the point other than being less messy PMs currently
-
@Zerglingman @coolboymew Given how revolver currently seems to work via piggybacking on olde Pleroma, probably not.
At least Pleroma supports using groups, but sadly not creating/maintaining them, we should work on this but I have like no motivation for it…
-
@coolboymew @Zerglingman @lanodan the point is to just use pleromafe everywhere. Although client API for matrix/xmpp clients and such would be nice.
-
@lanodan @Zerglingman @coolboymew what can I do to motivate you?
-
@hj @lanodan @coolboymew lol
-
@coolboymew @Zerglingman Problem of existing chat protocols is that well… bridging would suck so we would have to implement a full IM server, which we're just not going to do.
As for mobile clients, I could write one for Qt Mobile but iOS/Android users aren't really going to be able to use it.
-
@Zerglingman @lanodan @coolboymew what?
-
@lanodan @coolboymew Just bundle an xmpp server and embed a client that points at it?
-
@lanodan @Zerglingman Well, for mobile, IMO, we just need to have husky support it, then it's no issue
It's just that I really, really don't like switching interface on pleroma-FE. I do if I need to look at my PMs for a minute, but otherwise I don't like going away from the timeline for some reasons. I wouldn't care to switch to the chat interface, hence why my talk of external clients, which I prefer for chats, but who knows, maybe I'm not being needlessly autistic
-
@coolboymew @Zerglingman @lanodan switching interface on pleromafe?
-
@hj @Zerglingman @coolboymew Probably via drafting some kind of API to manage the groups.
I think we could stick to basic groups at first and then iterate on the design to make more advanced ones, otherwise I feel like we're never going to get groups (chewing more than we're capable of).
-
@hj @Zerglingman @lanodan by that I mean I click on chats currently, and the timeline disappears. This is okay for a quick check on desktop, but I don't like having it switched out for something longer
-
@lanodan @Zerglingman @coolboymew OK, I can do that I think. Just give me concepts I need to operate on.
-
@coolboymew @Zerglingman @lanodan hmm we could make it behave similarly to notifications drawer...
-
@coolboymew @Zerglingman @hj So like a chat widget on desktop?
(I guess mobile is way too crowded, but maybe notification kind of thing could be there)
-
@lanodan @Zerglingman @hj something like that?
-
@coolboymew @Zerglingman @lanodan we do want to have customizable multiple columns so chats might as well be a separate column.
-
@hj @Zerglingman @lanodan more customisation is great, I'm not the only one using it
Here's how I'm currently using it
I prefer having my notifs this side, and it being more zoomed in. I don't understand why most websites these days are so small and don't even make good use of the space in 1080p, so I zoom in most of the web
