Remember when you used to buy strawberry ice cream and it was just strawberry flavoured ice cream? I swear that has been deleted from existence. Now it’s all either vanilla ice cream with strawberry chunks or if you’re lucky, strawberry ice cream with strawberry chunks. Don’t get me wrong, I like the latter of those, but it’s just not the same; sometimes you want to be able to scoop into a bowl of delicious, fruity, soft ice cream without encountering a single solid mass. For a while you could at least find refuge in Neapolitan, which was as yet untainted by the strawberry chunks, but now even that has begun to include them. And all I can say is: Why? Who asked for this? Is it better? I would be hard pressed to say it’s necessarily worse, but is it better? I don’t think so. A sidegrade, at best, but I find myself yearning for the old days of chunkless strawberry ice cream. Yet another small comfort from my childhood that the gods have cruelly ripped away from me.
