Anime Wong (elliptica@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 17-Jun-2023 08:08:28 JST Anime Wong @djsumdog @mushroom_soup I'm reminded of a budgeting strategy; if you want to cut spending, it's better to cut a few big things than lots of little things. The big things to cut is social security. Similarly, almost half of the US military budget also goes to welfare things like tricare. Cut that, and then you've basically solved the debt issue. Certainty, school lunches are not driving up the national debt.
The other problem though is that most developed nations are in huge amounts of debt, but it's all to themselves. I don't know who exactly is going to collect the US's debt, for example. China owns only a small part of it, and the other debt holders are also in huge debt. Most of it is to things like banks, and they don't want to start that fight. This is all fake.Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks likes this. -
Anime Wong (elliptica@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 17-Jun-2023 08:08:30 JST Anime Wong @djsumdog @mushroom_soup I think that's, more or less, what they do. I remember kids who got free lunches, and others who got subsidized lunches. Either way, lunches are usually really cheap.
What really bugs me about this is this is just really petty boomer stuff. We have much bigger problems, and they always come back to "we need to reduce spending". Why? -
djsumdog (djsumdog@djsumdog.com)'s status on Saturday, 17-Jun-2023 08:08:30 JST djsumdog Because the country is in insane amounts of debt? Like trillions?! … and I know you can take the Graber/Debt: The First 5,000 Years approach and say it’s all made up and every emperor in history cancelled debt and blah blah blah communism .. blah blah .. I don’t want to pay my student loans even thought they’re only $10k.
Sure, debt is a social construct, but it’s also a representation of faith and belief in institutions. I do like the few current GOP members (MTG, Bobart/event though she missed the debt ceiling vote, Gaetz, Paul) are at least trying to say “Hey, let’s fucking stop spending!” The US government is solidly into the red, to the point where issuing new debt is eroding trust both internally and externally.
We’re seeing a lot of countries not wanting to trade petrol in the dollar anymore, and that’s ultimately devalues everyone who still does trade petrol in the dollar.
We should be cutting the unnecessary. Every fucking thing. If they ask for everything and only get school lunches, should they back down? Probably not .. take it and cut some more. The more the government gives you, the more you are their slave. The more the people do for themselves, the more they realize they don’t need the government. You should be able to feed your fucking kids!

djsumdog (djsumdog@djsumdog.com)'s status on Saturday, 17-Jun-2023 08:08:31 JST djsumdog I remember school meals being stupid cheap in the late 90s. They were always heavily subsidized. There were some kids on free meal plans.
I dunno ... universal free meals for every student does seem fucking retardville. I bought a school meal twice in primary school; my mom usually just packed me a lunch. If you start giving every kid a taxpayer funded meal, that's diverting money from other programs ... plus parents who pack health stuff for their kids are now also paying for sugar filled diabetus lunches for everyone else.
Why not just affordable subsidized meals for those who want them? Making everything free/provided by the state usually lowers the quality across the board, and gives up more control to the state. -

Hearing the GOP talk about reducing spending on these tiddlywinks is cringe-inducing, like hearing a battered wife tell the kids there’s no christmas or birthday presents on the horizon, and the food budget is slashed to $3 of beans a week…..because nobody wants to tell dad to stop blowing his paycheck on weed and lottery tickets
