A Chinese man’s AirPods suddenly exploded inside his ear when listening to music. A gym-goer set down his AirPods, when one side started to smoke, and could’ve gone through the same ordeal. Using electronic devices is just a part of daily life, but when batteries can suddenly combust, what damages can they cause? Why do batteries explode, and what precautions can we take? Let’s get into it!
@ceo_of_monoeye_dating@sjw BONE CONDUCTION SELF-CONTAINED MEDIA PLAYER HEADSET, SD CARD, DUAL REMOVABLE BATTERIES, BLUETOOTH MEDIA SERVER FOR PLAYLIST MANAGEMENT ONE TRUE STYLE
@sjw@ceo_of_monoeye_dating Actually I lie. Bluetooth bad idea. But I think wifi would be even more annoying. Maybe we just need a new standard for that? Or is there some ancient standard that actually worked that served this purpose?
@ceo_of_monoeye_dating@sjw No cables are shit, and wireless is shit too. Wireless is better than cables overall. We can just embed the media player in the headset itself. This is the only sane move at this point. No cables, no dropouts. And I wouldn't even carry a fone.
@Zerglingman@ceo_of_monoeye_dating@sjw yeah, i hate wires so i went with bt headphones. would've wanted hybrid headphones, but they were too expensive at the time
@Zerglingman@ceo_of_monoeye_dating@sjw the ancient standard that actually worked is wires. yeah, wires suck. Everyone hates wires. All of my wires are driven by chaotic forces to knot themselves the instant they're left to their own devices. Everyone who hates wires is old enough to have used shitty wires that break easily and sound like garbage, as well. But we're not living in paradise and wires are as good as it gets. Accept and deal with the familiar suckage of wires. If you want a vision of the best future, it's you untangling wires and getting things caught on wires--forever.
@apropos@sjw@ceo_of_monoeye_dating nyet I refuse to believe this is an unsolvable problem. To be honest, bluetooth is good enough if you're not relying on it that much; that's why I say for playlist management only. It should be entirely optional, and is powered off unless actually in use. But I figure why not try to actually solve the problem while we're at it.
Wi-Fi could work and would be really interesting. Especially if it only used the 6E bands.
It would definitely be more secure than Bluetooth, it would have much higher data transmission speed, and with some of the features in Wi-Fi 6, it could probably maybe get comparable battery life. Other features may be lost tho.
@sjw@ceo_of_monoeye_dating >battery life No that's my whole fucking point. This thing shouldn't even be turned on most of the time. It should ONLY be on when you want to do things that need a screen. The music should be playing from the headset itself. You just put an SD card in it and go. That's the solution to playing music. I am trying to solve "playing specific tracks" and such.
@grey@sjw@ceo_of_monoeye_dating idk what you've been using aftershokz AS800 just werks, even when riding. Actually less painful than my Corsair Void; it pushes my glasses into my head, right at the back.
@sjw@ceo_of_monoeye_dating@grey Oh actually I should throw a caution... I met a guy in Japan who had what appeared to be the same model, which he'd had to tape up on the left side 'cause it broke. Then like a week later (~2 years after purchase) mine broke on the left side. But it's internal, so taping it won't really help. (Tinny rattle if it moves quickly, and that speaker drops out into quiet static if it flips upside down.) So I think they have a habit of doing that.
@Zerglingman@ceo_of_monoeye_dating@sjw I think having a huge head might be the issue (size 8 hat). Every one is too tight on me, they just push too hard into the bone. Also glasses don't help.
@grey@sjw@ceo_of_monoeye_dating That makes sense. I don't think I have a small head but the thing sits out a good 1.5cm or so which is annoying when I want to rest my head on a seat back or whatever. So that's another thing it should be able to do; actual real adjustment.
