@CraigBaird@birdsite >> Some of the longest filibusters in Canadian federal history, a historical thread! >> June 23-25, 2011: The NDP led a 58-hour filibuster to prevent the passing of Bill C-6, which would have imposed a four-year contract & pay conditions on locked out Canada Post workers. >> November-December, 1964: John Diefenbaker & the PCs led a filibuster amid 6 weeks of debate on adopting the Maple Leaf flag. The PCs gave 210 speeches, Liberals 50, NDP 24 & Social Credit 15. PC MP Leon Balcer broke with Dief to end the entire matter on the flag. >> January-February 1881: The Liberals attempted to filibuster debate over creating the CPR. During the filibuster, the Liberal Opposition put forward 24 amendments, including one 3.5 pages long. >> 1885: Edward Blake, leader of the Liberal Party, launched a 57-hour filibuster after the Conservatives attempted to push forward dominion qualifications for voters in federal elections. >> May 1913: A filibuster lasted for two weeks, with the House in Session for 24 hours per day, with only one Sunday off the entire time. >> The Liberals would read Janes Fighting Ships, the British North American Act & the Bible out loud to stall the debate. https://twitter.com/CraigBaird/status/1666953529926492160
@jeffcliff :doubt: this seems..... off. What happened between rounds 1 and 2? The senator there seems to have forgotten how to land any punches. I mean he was punching a little wild in that first round, but in the second he seems completely inept.
i mean to the conservatives credit, they put their fists up against justin trudeau (and lost) within recent memory so I can see why they would choose more peaceful means of protest https://invidious.poast.org/watch?v=XuSpZ3_5pTc
