Some people get that upset over defending Stalin, or Mao, or Imperial Japan as well. But despite killing more people or doing so even more sadistically, you don't get jumped on with the same ferocity nor by as many people for defending them.
And there's nothing Hitler did that other historical figures didn't do. You can hero worship Napoleon, Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great and the typical person just thinks you're kind of odd.
