I have decided that if I want to keep being kind of chaotic in the garden I need to at least log what I do. I have so much unlabeled stuff and a bunch of randomly planted seed in the yard I always find it difficult to remember what's what. I'm going to start writing down what I do after I do it and maybe transfer that to a blog or something later if there is anything worthwhile to post

@thatguyoverthere Do you do thing with the plants that feed each other, so to speak? Also wondering if you have any experience doing the "liquefied weeds" thing where you put them in a bucket of water to ferment for a week or so and add their nutrients to the ground.

@BowsacNoodle I do some companion planting. This bed is mainly strawberry and blueberry (they don't feed each other but they like the same environment and don't compete), but there is also a wild berry that is like a small strawberry and I think it's actually acting as a distraction for the birds because I am not finding my strawberries pecked out like I do up front.
I also have a little lettuce and some flowers in here. I have been working on trimming back the wild berry, but I don't want to completely get rid of it because it seems like it might be a good defense and it doesn't seem to be affecting the strawberry plants at all other than spreading much quicker.

@BowsacNoodle When I first planted my blueberries I tried planting them with raspberry, but after a few years the blueberries all looked sickly and a few had even died. I transplanted them 2 years ago, and I now have 4 in the front and back of the house. There are also strawberries in both places, but the strawberries up front are not as prolific as they are out back. Several of the plants died (I think they may have been crushed). The one that survived has sprouted one runner, and any berries it makes are immediately eaten by birbs

@OldM8 yeah soil quality has been a years long project, and I still have plenty of places where the soil is pretty much clay or dust. The key areas where I have focused my attention are looking really nice though. This is from years of my Dad having the leaves from the trees removed instead of letting them break down in place or composting them and putting the soil where needed. A lot of chemicals and stuff were once used to tend the soil I am working with, but this year things have been doing really well and looking great. Hopefully it keeps up.

@thatguyoverthere Yeah, been doin a bit of sowing as the winter rains are coming in. Growing chickpeas next to the leafy greens, hopefully the lettuce should do well this year as i have been workin hard laying out sheep manure tryna break the nutrient-poor, heavy clay soils.
other than that, been observing native plants and birds and putting it on iNaturalist

@thatguyoverthere How about the liquefied weeds? Is that anything worthwhile?

@BowsacNoodle I've not really heard of it but sound like compost tea basically. Should work. I use chicken shit and a little mostly finished compost to make mine
