I think I am nearing the point where I can start to harvest new potatoes. That might help me get a sense for how much growth is going on. I'm growing in hay so I should be able to reach in without disturbing too much.
@thatguyoverthere It’s always tricky to call, I find. I’ll probably start lifting mine in a couple of weeks, so yours are likely ready now. Personally I like to start a bit too soon (one meal per plant stage), and then just lift them one plant at a time when I need them.
@Flick that might be a really good strategy because I have a few that get a little less light and are further behind than the front of the bed, so maybe I just work my way back. I have flower buds, but they haven't bloomed yet. Should I wait for them to bloom or nah?
@Flick the plants are about 4 ft tall now. I just put a new layer of hay down today because they were starting to get a little high above the last layer, and the last time I tried growing potatoes they fell over and died when I let them get too tall. This bed is much better prepared than my previous run was, and everything is looking great.
@Flick maybe 3ft now that I look. Still they have some height. Nearing the top of the makeshift cage I built around the box. I think I'm going to build a permanent box around both of these raised beds that can double as a cold frame over winter and a lattice for climbing plants. Also with a lid to prevent seed theft.
