   @sim Naruto is loosely based on some of their myths. There is a real 9 tail fox myth. A rock broke last year that was supposed to contain his spirit.

     As strange as this sounds, I actually don't watch Japanese anime to be represented by them. I'd much rather watch Japanese people on the screen going about their day or taking some action or making an important decision in their lives. Learning more about their myths/folklore, their culture, their people... learning about the values that are important to them. Even better, being able to enjoy a good story which involves character arcs and worldbuilding.
