sim@shitposter.club's status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 20:32:19 JST sim @dave @Flick I suppose it could be worth venturing into the garden now you mention it, you get the benefits of fresher air, maybe the sun if good weather and exercise in one.
Although my muscles are nice and sore today.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -
Flick 🇬🇧 (flick@spinster.xyz)'s status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 20:32:20 JST Flick 🇬🇧 @sim Keeping in mind that I’m forever stopping while Dog sniffs at / wees on things, I reckon about an hour and a half of solid walking would get you most of the way there. Four or five miles, maybe?

sim@shitposter.club's status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 20:32:20 JST sim @Flick "To get an idea of how many steps you should take for a base fitness level that falls within the recommended guidelines, 10,000 steps a day is about 5 miles of walking for most people. If you walk at an average pace, you will cover about 3 miles in an hour. So two and a half hours of walking per week - or about 15,000 steps - would give you the minimum amount of activity according to these guidelines."
That is the basic guideline, but not sure that I would be taking the average pace... haha. Maybe the trick is to find walks that are exactly 5 miles and complete them? -
Flick 🇬🇧 (flick@spinster.xyz)'s status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 20:32:20 JST Flick 🇬🇧 @sim Given you’re not used to walking, you might do better to build up more gradually.
Or you could do what @dave did and walk in circles around your house. How’s that going, Dave? Did you get back into it or have you ventured outside now the weather’s better?

Flick 🇬🇧 (flick@spinster.xyz)'s status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 20:32:21 JST Flick 🇬🇧 @sim I’m typically around 7-8k at this time of year, which is about an hour walking the dog and about an hour pottering in the garden (plus the usual moving around the house stuff). When the weather’s less good, maybe 6k.

sim@shitposter.club's status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 20:32:21 JST sim @Flick That makes sense. 10k seems crazy, like you would have to go for a very long walk out. Although it would be interesting how many steps I can do in an hour. -
sim@shitposter.club's status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 20:32:46 JST sim @Flick @dave I do surprise myself by how much I can walk still when I do walk. Makes me wonder how moon was able to do this though.
What about walking inside your house or is that what you meant here?Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -
sim@shitposter.club's status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 20:36:41 JST sim @grillchen Yeah. I'm wondering what the best way for me to reach that number is. Although I might need a watch to help track how many steps I've taken until I know how long it would actually take me. -
Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 20:36:41 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @sim @grillchen IMO the number of steps doesn't really matter. The benefit is for your heart more than your legs. Setting a step target helps estimate how much you will need to walk to keep your heart rate slightly elevated for a period of time. If you pick a target at a distance that you can walk to and back in 30-45 minutes a day you probably don't need to fret over actual step counts. -
grillchen (grillchen@brotka.st)'s status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 20:36:43 JST grillchen @sim just existing i usually reach 10k most days. Some days i just sit around than i barely reach 1k.
Though i chose a lifestyle on purpose with everything in walking distances
it helps me relaxing and forcing myself to stop doing headheavy things -
Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 22:27:34 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @sim @grillchen yeah the target step count is an overly complicated way to set your goals IMO since there is no way to track it without some kind of pedometer. It is also good to avoid long periods of inactivity, even on rest days. I guess you could say the counting of steps does have the added benefit of motivating a person to be less sedentary throughout the day too (as long as you always have a cell phone or pedometer attached to your hip).
And yes the extended period of elevated heart rate and increased respiration increases caloric burn which helps put keep you in a calorie deficit (weight loss). Walking is good because most people can do it for a reasonable amount of time without putting too much stress on the cardiovascular system like higher intensity workouts will do. It also trains the heart to respond to work a bit better.
Also remember if your muscles are sore (good thing), make sure to do a little light stretching, and do some light warm ups to get the joints lubricated before going on a walk. Stretching while sore might be a little less comfortable than usual, but it will help keep your muscles from tightening up too much during recovery. -
sim@shitposter.club's status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 22:27:35 JST sim @thatguyoverthere @grillchen Ah, that makes sense. If I had to walk as many steps as mentioned, it would probably take me a long time each day. So the important part is to keep my heart elevated for up to an hour? However that is done?
I definitely woke up today and felt my efforts from yesterday. Going to take it a bit easier today. -
grillchen (grillchen@brotka.st)'s status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 22:27:42 JST grillchen @sim @thatguyoverthere yeah alot of steps are done with inbetween stuff. u u were to walk 1h straight u walk probably around 2500-4000 steps
small steps are better than no steps for me atleast. i prefer going to the gym and working out 50% of my usuall amount over not going at allDisinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

sim@shitposter.club's status on Tuesday, 30-May-2023 23:28:46 JST sim @thatguyoverthere @grillchen Thanks for this reminder. I'll need to figure out a good stretching routine but I moved in a way that felt right. Going to do some more movement so I'm not stuck online all day. Thinking about what small things I can do too.
