   Why can’t VLC ever pick the right subtitles? Wish I could assign some for a file and have it use them every time forever. Never, ever works for me and IDK why .

     @anonaccount I think all mine are joined, I’ll dig a bit but I think they’re all in that cheesy torrent thing where it’s three blank tracks and one good one, all named after the pirate group instead of the language.

     I’ll look at it though, it would be cool to have a simpler way

     @WashedOutGundamPilot VLC assigns subtitles by their file name: for example, if your video is "Hello.mp4" VLC will search for "Hello.srt" in the same folder. It works for me.

     @WashedOutGundamPilot Because the file names must match exactly (sans the extension). Otherwise the player loads nothing or everything.
     
     Here must be obligatory “be a man, write a shell wrapper to load by episode number!” And while you’re at it, may also direct the player to store screenshots into a separate folder. (I tried this once, it was awful.)

     also I've never had a problem with VLC using the wrong subtitles

     Signs & Symbols - English Dialogue@EMBER - [English] USAD - [English]

     Only the 2nd option has subs on it every dang time
