The truth is that the much of the groundwork for these kinds of legislation was laid over the past 20 - 30 years, and the people have been slowly pulled toward being more and more accepting of authoritarianism as long as we keep calling it democracy. None of the aformentioned bills (RESTRICT, EARN IT, Online Safety, or ChatControl) could exist without the security framework put in place after 9/11. In the US we had the PATRIOT Act, but there were similar bills around the world. Since then (and probably before) the national intelligence agencies have been helping each other find ways to work around their own country's laws protecting people from unwarranted surveillance. Recently more products that encrypt traffic (and are easy for non-technical people to use) making those existing laws less useful have been hitting the market, so it's time to find new ways to track and monitor people who have not been accused of any crimes.-

It doesn't look like it is. See the RESTRICT Act (US) and the EARN IT (US) Act vs the Online Safety Bill (UK) and ChatControl (EU).
It doesn't look like their Second Amendment is working very well.
But IANAL.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this.
