It belongs on a Top-100 vidya list, but #1 seems stretching it. -
Christi Junior (christijunior@detroitriotcity.com)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 06:23:37 JST Christi Junior @ArdainianRight Xenoblade 2 is easily the superior adventure, and Mario Odyssey is a far more complete and satisfying gaming experience overall. BotW objectively loses a lot of what made past 3D Zelda games great with its transition to open world, there's just no defending the temples being so short and samey, the enemy variety being so shit, and the story being so much less than the launch trailer made it out to be. And obviously, I despise its minimalist, low-key approach to music.
In some areas it genuinely did exceed my expectations however, the art style is absolutely perfect for 3D Zelda, the Shrine system is brilliant, and the collection of towns is actually the best in the series IMO (tho it has no single outstanding city like Clock Town or even Skyloft). I personally rank it above Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker, but below Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword (certainly the HD remaster at any rate).Ardainian Hebrew Israelite likes this. -
Christi Junior (christijunior@detroitriotcity.com)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 06:30:07 JST Christi Junior @ArdainianRight Also, any top 10 list without Ocarina of Time or Xenoblade 1, but with The Pozzed of Us at #2, is objectively worthless. Ardainian Hebrew Israelite likes this. -

The gameplay is still fun, but rudimentary by modern standards. It was an absolute landmark for the medium when it came out and is still a fun game, even if later games would largely surpass it. -

Christi Junior (christijunior@detroitriotcity.com)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 06:53:39 JST Christi Junior @ArdainianRight @xianc78 @LittleTom The temple design is still superb, the pacing is still brilliant and the storytelling is actually far superior to something like Twilight Princess, with twists that hit HARD. I still consider OoT easily superior to BotW without even taking nostalgia into a account. Ardainian Hebrew Israelite likes this. -

High Priest El Sexo (miaelk@poa.st)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 07:33:23 JST High Priest El Sexo @LittleTom @ChristiJunior @ArdainianRight @xianc78 There were numerous banger games on PC at the time too, alot of people are more familiar with console stuff, and I have no doubt that these office workers and artists borrowed inspiration from various titles before them. Not to mention the more based fantasy media already existing. xianc78 likes this. -
LittleTom (littletom@poa.st)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 07:33:24 JST LittleTom @ChristiJunior @ArdainianRight @xianc78 Oh yeah I like OoT and Majora's Mask way more than any of the following 3D Zelda games, though every one of them has at least a few things they do really well. -
Christi Junior (christijunior@detroitriotcity.com)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 07:33:24 JST Christi Junior @LittleTom @ArdainianRight @xianc78 The Zelda Team were seriously Inspired from 1995 to 2000, the Muse of gaming was giving them her all.
It pisses me off that Nintendo later on has shown little appreciation for, and next to no understanding of Majora's Mask, as the 3DS remake showed. When BotW 2 was first revealed, they went out of their way to say that it WOULDN'T be like Majora's Mask, as if being a Majora's Mask-like sequel would be a bad thing. -
LittleTom (littletom@poa.st)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 08:12:33 JST LittleTom @ChristiJunior @ArdainianRight @xianc78 Yeah SS holds up a lot better than TP for me, TP's hyrule field is shockingly boring, and they actually managed to take the shitty tears of light segments from TP and make them one of the coolest parts of SS. -
Christi Junior (christijunior@detroitriotcity.com)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 08:12:33 JST Christi Junior @LittleTom @ArdainianRight @xianc78 Whether you like the tears of light segments in SS or not, at least they feel like they have a genuine purpose and a legitimate reason to be in the game, in TP it felt like pure padding. Not that SS doesn't have a fair bit of padding of its own of course, but still... -
LittleTom (littletom@poa.st)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 08:12:34 JST LittleTom @ChristiJunior @ArdainianRight @xianc78 Definitely a ton of talent and altogether still some of the best devs in the industry, just lacking some of that worldly inspiration and vision the older guys had, that's the way I feel about a lot of stuff coming from Japan - the younger generations tend to have a little less life experience to draw from and perhaps lack the confidence to be as bold as their priors.
I also think SS has great area and puzzle design, I honestly think it's one of the best post 64 Zelda games. It's kind of an inverse BotW where it lacks in freedom and exploration but excels at the more linear level design. -
Christi Junior (christijunior@detroitriotcity.com)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 08:12:34 JST Christi Junior @LittleTom @ArdainianRight @xianc78 I actually really appreciated Skyward Sword's more compact world after Twilight Princess flat and empty Hyrule. It also fixed a lot of the small issues that annoyed me in TP, like money now actually feeling useful again for most of the game, and enemies actually being able to hit pretty hard. The first Ghirahim fight is no joke!
I'm glad the HD remaster fixed a lot of SS's unnecessary self-owns, even managing to make Fi tolerable by greatly toning down her nagging and forced help. -
Christi Junior (christijunior@detroitriotcity.com)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 08:12:35 JST Christi Junior @LittleTom @ArdainianRight @xianc78 I dunno, Skyward Sword actually does have my favorite collection of items and the best puzzles in the series IMO, it was just held back by certain other issues. Of course, that goes for all post-N64 3D Zelda games, they all feel flawed and unbalanced in some way, even compared to Majora's Mask, which while sidequest-focused still delivered one of the best boss fights (Goth) and one of the best dungeons (Stone Tower Temple) in the series. I definitely think the talent is still there, they just lack, I dunno, the right vision and ability to plan things out properly from start to finish. And of course, the excessive success of BotW removed all incentives to adequately improve on that game's many shortcomings. -
LittleTom (littletom@poa.st)'s status on Thursday, 11-May-2023 08:12:59 JST LittleTom @ChristiJunior @ArdainianRight @xianc78 I even like a lot of what people call padding in SS...not Scrapper though, everything to do with him was straight up padding, and having all 3 imprisoned fights in the boss rush was retarded. -
