     From #Zulip to #XMPP-#OMEMO & #IRC...

     And I'm not even talking about #OnionShare...

     The named ones are very much centralized.and most don't even offer full #SelfHosting at all...

     @kkarhan @downey would you prefer government just go to Google or Microsoft for their encrypted communications? I personally would like to see government forced to use free software instead of consuming "cloud" services from exploitative corpos.

     @kkarhan @downey the one thing that I think is important is that other than the struggle of trying to explain federation to non-technical people, my friends and family are able to actually use element+matrix without a lot of technical support.

     @kkarhan @downey I believe the EU has a mastodon instance, and some part of the German government at least is using Matrix IIRC. I think if we want government to use opensource software they may at times need support. It seems like matrix org offering support to government for money would be preferred over them saying no viable opensource options exist.
     
     At least in the US, they are still very reliant on MS and Google. I'd very much like to see more free software actually being considered.
     
     As far as I can tell the matrix org people do not support legislation designed to weaken encryption, but they do accept government money for services rendered. If we boycott all software that has been touched by government money we lose a lot of technology.

     @thatguyoverthere @downey OFC not and trhe already do that anyway, no matter the fact that it's illegal.

     Since when does the Governement follow laws unless it's forced to comply?

     OFC governments should use FLOSS but I doubt they actually do, cuz every agency of importance will demand an NDA and denial by said companies that they supply them for #ITsec, #OpSec, #InfoSec & #ComSec reasons unless they're fully-vetted as government contractors and don't allow anyone to work for them w/o clearance.

     @thatguyoverthere @downey Yes, I do acknowledge that issue and I think a lot of Software has to become far more user-friendly.

     Needless to say it's also based around the fact that people don't get taught #TechLiteracy but groomed into consoomers in schools and at work...
