@cjd RFK is a strange bird. He seems completely taken up by climate "science" but rejects the supposed benefits of most modern vaccines. I read something that suggested he believed arguing against the current trend wrt climate is deserving of some kind of punishment. Seems dangerous if so.
-
@cjd yeah I just think anyone who thinks those who disagree with me need to be punished is not someone I want in charge. I don't know how well the enemy of my enemy tactic has worked out thus far
-
I'm ok with that, because he might have some kookie ideas but he's very likely to be *at odds* with the currently dominant power structure, so his presence will have a net positive effect for ordinary people.
It's kind of "bate and bleed" tactic, but for politics.
-
@cjd do you mean to say trump wants dissenters punished or trump is a lesser of two evils pick that worked out?
-
Trump.
-
He's a perfect case of enemy-of-my-enemy, he never got powerful enough to do much of anything on his own, and he was a massive pain in the rear for TPTB, so win/win.
-
@cjd he also made several decisions that I would say made the establishment even stronger. Whether that's because he was tricked or it's all part of the show is difficult to say.
-
@cjd bump stocks is a big one. He also made some pretty shit decisions around tobacco policy, and I still say warp speed was a huge mistake.
-
Care to name a few examples?
Not saying they don't exist, just that I can't remember well...
-
@cjd also generally speaking he was very quick to issue executive orders which I oppose even if the specific order isn't offensive on it's own.
-
@cjd yeah I do like that more people are questioning things now, but I think that might have happened with or without warp speed once people realized that covid was likely to have been man made. Unfortunately that aspect is still mostly a footnote in the whole ordeal somehow.
I agree he does seem like the kind of guy that might be into being King. Luckily I don't think anything like that is possible so it's kind of a harmless fetish of his as far as I am concerned. That said, EOs are very similar to a King's edict which is one reason I oppose them (another being that even if they are good ideas they can't be expected to last longer than the president who issues them).
-
Operation Warp Speed is kind of an interesting case, because while the first order effect was quite terrible, the second order effect is that the whole medical/scientific establishment has been discredited.
What I dislike most about Trump is that the way he talks, it seems like if he got a chance, he would declare himself king for life.
-
@cjd The weird thing with RFK is he's spent years railing against the "scientific community" challenging the "consensus" opinion on vaccine safety and efficacy, but when it comes to the "consensus" opinion on things like the impact of co2 on the atmosphere and climate, he's all in and thinks anyone who has doubts is a despicable human.
-
@cjd I suppose if a person had enough "grass roots" support throughout the military and citizenry it could be done. It just seems like even if someone did actually commit a coop of the executive branch there would be uprisings, but who knows.
-
For a president, declaring himself king is far from impossible IMO. Basically what needs to happen is he has to *murder* everyone in government except his party loyalists. After that, there's nobody who can effectively oppose him and he can just say whatever he wants.
> Against the Constitution
Yes, like 99% of everything the federal government does already.
-
Right, so if you try that and you don't have someone like Jim Mattis behind you, you're going to die.
-
@cjd I guess it just seems to me like there are too many free agents that would not necessarily get in line for a complete overthrow of the government. The type of overthrow I think we're more subject to is one where our leaders sign agreements with other members of global bodies that require us to follow laws that are dictated by unelected outside forces. We'll keep the thin veneer of a republic but one without teeth of it's own.
-
@cjd only true while the dollar is the preferred currency for international trade, something that may be on the decline.
-
Not much of a risk for the US, because these "unelected international bodies" vanish up in smoke if the US stops giving them dollars.
-
@cjd also, the desired policy doesn't have to come through government. ESG and DEI[B] are brought to you by finance
-
Well sort of, that's a longer discussion, but the point is if the US pulls out of UN/WHO/NATO/... they all collapse instantly. Nobody else wants to fund them.
-
@cjd yes but no legislation is required.
-
That's BlackRock using government money to prop up zombie corporations with govt loyalists. Anyone who had to earn their money wouldn't blow it like that.
