   I think he may have the rule backwards. It's not admissible if it's the defendant's prior acts. It could be admissible if it speaks to a defense the defendant wants to raise. Here it would speak to the reasonableness of the defendant's perceptions. Furthermore, prohibiting the defendant from presenting a defense, even a ridiculous one, can be a per se violation of due process.

     On a side note, prior acts of a defendant may be admissible if they show habit or modus operandi.

     Federal Rules of Evidence 404 is correct for federal. Most states have a similar rule.
