  So long as capitalism exists, someone has to pay the bills. I pay the bills for this mastodon instance out of my own pocket, and I do most of the software upkeep as well. This means that, if I stop doing it, this instance will go away! The network won't go away, and only a few people will be inconvenienced. That's why we need lots of small nodes. That's how you build resiliency. Lots of things, spread out all over the place, all different, but mostly working together.
