You can know something is wrong and do it anyway (you might even feel some empathy for those you harm in the process). You can also think something is right when others think it's wrong. empathy helps you recognize the needs of others as if they were your own, but even then you are really just simulating how you think they feel in your own mind.
There is also an argument to be made that religiosity is largely an unavoidable human behavior. If so then it's not a matter of whether or not you use religion to determine right from wrong, but which religion you are using.-

Knowing something is wrong implies some level of morality or knowledge of morals.Everything is perceived through our senses and compiled into experiences, religion or empathy provide the frame work for interpretation of the experience
Both these concepts religion and empathy are taught/learned. They don't help much if they are widely skewed from the rest of the larger society you interact with.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

There are specific neurons that might be responsible for empathy, but it is based on learned behaviors same as religion. The benefit of religion over empathy is that you don't need those specific neurons to function correctly as long as you believe the religion to be true as far as making morality based decisions. I would also say that as far as whether or not a moral code helps is partially dependent on the truthiness of the source of that moral code, and in some cases it may be more important than whether or not your morals align with the current zeitgeist. If you live in a society that is devoid of recognizable morality, but your moral code is founded in truth, it still helps guide you to make good decisions even if that ultimately makes your life more uncomfortable.
