I’m glad you’re looking into this stuff, imho fedi can’t survive without a way to run instances at a profit (or at least not being a giant money pit and time suck)
@silverpill@mia@ademan you had the right idea with paid posts (or sponsored? I can't remember) paid content for the end user to interact with those they follow and want to support is something I wish more social media had tied into it and i would definitely like to see it here. we have 10grans which is a real crypto but it's a pain to get and transfer to fedi to use so adoption is low
@graf@mia@ademan Yeah, I worked on subscriptions: content creator makes private posts and only paid subscribers can access them. The implementation is based on regular direct messages with multiple recipients, so it federates with existing fedi platforms.
In the beginning I used Ethereum tokens for payments but later added support for Monero, and people seem to be much more interested in it. We have 13 instances at the moment: http://demo.fedilist.com/instance?software=mitra. I don't have the data on the actual usage of subscription feature, but I still think it's the best way to monetize. Even mainstream businesses entering fediverse are considering subscription model (subscriber-only features in apps, premium instances etc).
@graf The only reason not to offer would be if it was a net negative to the balance of subscribers. I don't think it is. Also, an easier anonymous payment method would be nice, but I don't know what that can be but to mail cash to the PO box- not a sure bet
@one_of_three liberapay is wholly anonymous to you and to us. it appears as liberapay on your statement and this is all we see. you can use changenow.io to cheaply buy XMR with other crypto which is another completely anonymous method. not sure how much more i could offer
