I reiterate that emulation and piracy is the only realistic future of game preservation. Physical media will break to the point that it can't be repaired. And what's the point of that one guy buying every single 3ds and wii u game only to put it in a museum that you have to drive out to and wait your turn to play?

Especially compounding this point are the releases themselves. Can it truly be argued that releases like Fates, Engage, and Bravely Default are worth preserving in their neutered state? Are you really preserving anything at all if you let the original real version of that game be lost in favor of the new shiny release or if you simply archive the censored english version?
I say no. We should be archiving the version that has been untouched by these alterations if we really care about the history of it. There is room for archiving both, but people need to be able to play these games as the devs made them, and the only way to do that is emulation and piracy, because Nintendo sure as fuck isn't gonna do it.

@berkberkman luckily ps3 emulation is making a ton of progress. And the majority of xcock games have pc releases.
There's still a ton of stuff from Xbox arcade that's lost forever though. Ikaruga being released on pc was a big deal because it was in this weird limbo where you couldn't play it unless you had it on an old Xbox.
Everything up to the ps2 and wii 3ds era is relatively safe though, which is good.

@Kyonko802 Archiving console exclusives is a another whole can of worms, too. I've yet to see a list of old games that have never gotten ported (nor "modernized") to newer hardware. Having to spend too much money on physical copies of them is a nuisance. Only archived ISO copies are the solution so far. CFW + homebrew is also essential, especially if you can play those copied game disc files. If only the PS4 could do that...

@Kyonko802 A good argument.
The version of Bravely default I played.... the story was pretty trash. Is it the version or is this game secretly great but extremely fucked over.... it was really an ass story.
-
@MiaElk nah BD has a pretty meh story. It was the costumes that got hit.
-
@MiaElk could probably use a translation check though. Square was already backing off of certain phrases back then.
-
@Kyonko802 it was a really bad story. But yeah, should be preserved. Poor Fire Emblem
-
@MiaElk BD was good mostly because of the gameplay and the cute characters. I don't know about 2s story though since I haven't played it yet

@Kyonko802 @berkberkman
Some "Tales of" games and Eternal Sonata are similarly trapped on the PS3 and I somehow lost its power cable. Nice to know emulation on that is getting stabilized but it means nothing for my toaster PC I'm afraid.

@Yagamaska @berkberkman it's okay you can get a gaming PC one day it's better than those titles being consigned to the shadow realm.

@Kyonko802 go forth noble pirate

I had this PC for almost a decade now, the very first I ever built. My consensus is that if it works to my (not all that intensive) needs, I'm not upgrading. Even the GPU is the same. Steam ending functionality for Windows 7 doesn't really bode well, however.
-
@Yagamaska @berkberkman It's fine, you can get a relatively cheap upgrade unless you're hankering to play PS3 games RIGHT NOW. The emulator still needs some work done anyways. A free copy of windows 10 or getting onto linux will solve the 7 issue with your games. I remember seeing that the other day in the steam news window too.
-
@Yagamaska @berkberkman 10 can mostly be de-fagged. And I haven't done anything super autismo on my distro in quite a while, by the time you actually feel like upgrading it'll probably be even easier to use. The good side with 10 though is even though turning off the intrusive shit takes time you don't have to pay for it :ina_nod:

@Kyonko802 @berkberkman
Alternatively, I can pirate whatever I already bought years ago. I have Linux but it's on another machine even older than my main one, acting as a really barebones media cloud of sorts. I lack the sufficient autism to use it full time I'm afraid.
Windows 10. I aided someone not all that tech savvy with installing that. It felt somehow intrusive (there's too much shit I couldn't opt out of) and presumptive of the user's intelligence at the same time. It's really hard to describe but it wasn't as "to the point" as Windows 7's installation. The very few times I (just as briefly) used it, it certainly isn't as different as I feared, but I don't like change if I can help it.
As you say, I'm not quite jonesing for playing the PS3 right now. Better off seeking out a replacement power cord and a not shit third-party controller. Maybe literally dust if off too. CFW/homebrew is out of the question, unfortunately. Too new, the model.
