   I'm still at it, trying to spin up a Glitch instance on a local VM.
   
   I run into issues with OpenSSL, so I am going to attempt to download the upstream version.

     gonna try to add memory to the VM and see if that solves anything. Looks like after the OS is loaded, I only have 2 GB.

     all right, it compiled! I decided to install Webmin to monitor it all and I must say this: You need 2 cores, and 4 GB of RAM to properly compile a Masto or Glitch instance from source.
     
     For now I'm calling it a night. #suya

     snagged again - I'm getting mime type errors. I can confirm that the database is in the correct format (UTF-8).
     
     I originally thought it was because I was running on a nonstandard port (62786 instead of 443), so I swapped port forwarding rules. No change.
     
     Then I thought, maybe it was because of permissions or ownership. I caught one folder with root ownership and changed it, and all public files are chmod 755.
     
     Still no change. I'll keep working at it but this is the present look of things.

     there's one conclusion left to draw - should an admin specify the port they use during initial setup if it is not going to be 443? This instance is behind a NAT.

     Does the webserver associate the right mime type with each type of file or data sent?

     no, it does not. It is saying there's a mismatch for every one. There's blank mimes and text/html mimes.

     I'm online, but now I'm getting 'security verification failed' errors when I try to log in as superadmin.
