     Just remembered there was a dude I met at an FBO who moved across the country because he got accepted as a volunteer medevac pilot in a small town. His plan was to move to a metro area and job hunt as a helo pilot (difficult, not many jobs around) all so he could literally work for free in a place about 4 hrs away from his new home, round trip

     @Eiregoat @Senator_Armstrong Adjuncts are basically tutors, and they con the kids into doing it for years w/ the promise they’ll become a professor when the boomer dies.

     I used to hang with a guy who’s STILL an aide for the school’s egyptology program, after 13 years or so he hasn’t moved up at all. Nightmare life.

     I get the impression a lot of those academic jobs are basically something they do because lawyers trade in prestige and "adjunct professor" sounds like it's gold plated.

     @Eiregoat @Senator_Armstrong Most of education is a ponzi scheme. Even flying. So many pilot mills promise a student to airline pipeline, then they stick you with 2 students at a time and pretend you’ll be able to time build to 1,500 hours when you get about ~60 hrs a student. You’ll be there for YEARS if you play by their rules.

     I dropped out of highschool, retired at 40, and own my own home. I am driving to the coast tomorrow to talk to some guy about buying a 36 foot sailboat because I got a hair up my ass today while listening to the Mutiny on the Bounty audiobook while I was working on shit today and now I really really REALLY need to sail to Tahiti and see if they still have any of those dusky brown big breasted native girls thirsty for the BIG ANGLO COCK left in stock.

     @CrushBead Hope you got a couple million in the bank already, because that sailboat is gonna need it. I used to follow a few of those people who just decide to travel the world by sail….I stopped because they always end up breaking down and becoming live-in port people as they struggle to raise the $80,000 for a new mast.

     A lot of those itinerant types end up in that situation. If you have a profitable career you can ply on the road you can stay afloat, then you can make it work.

     Yeah... I'm inclined to avoid any industry with more hopefuls than jobs. Merchant marine is another one, also animation and game dev. It gets worse when there's rampant affirmative action and you can't even succeed by being good at it.

     @Eiregoat @Senator_Armstrong Any job worth doing is that way though. Seen it in every line of work I’ve ever been in. A never ending line of people whose parents will pay their bills into their 30’s as long as it ends with them being paid to X

     It's more true of high prestige jobs with low barriers to entry. Creative jobs are particularly awful for it.
     
     Jobs that require a lot of math tend to cut a lot of the bullshit. Or at least they used to, nowadays who knows.

     Yeah, I've only seen a couple of those sailing blogs and they all ended up stuck somewhere washing dishes or whatever so they could afford a few grand or more in repairs to make it to their next destination.
     
     I don't like the possibility of getting stuck somewhere because of crap like that but it doesn't bother some people that much apparently.
