   I've been getting rate limited please retry messages all morning.

   Hope it's because of an influx, but I'm pretty sure #Mastodon is not a replacement for #Twitter. I've been here a few months and it's a completely different experience. I had a few thousand followers on that site and don't really expect to see (or really want) that here.

   And I wonder what happens to Twitter when it goes bankrupt or it's owner loses interest - or both?

     Twitter's demise is coming under somewhat different circumstances - it's not just people tiring of the platform.

     I think I'm wondering partly because of all the whiners here complaining this isn't Twitter and those staying there despite whining about it.

     Also, how are you seeing my toots without following me? The home feed? That's hard for me to get through. I tend to use lists.

     Part of the appeal of Twitter is that it's simple and easy to use - both qualities (in a vacuum) are replicable.

     Digg and MySpace were hugely popular in their respective eras and I'm sure people thought they would be using them for a long time and for various reasons, they left those platforms too. Twitter will be no different.

     Best case scenario? He sells it off to some other group, who then try to maintain it as a legacy site.
