Several scholars went to the Master to complain that they could not study that day, as the barbarians (南蠻) who lived next to them refused to refill their water clocks and the scraping of the bamboo on stone kept them up all night.
The Master replied: "The men of the jungle still live as though in the jungle, where silence is the note of a predator. Therefore they cannot abide silence. To live around those who are still animals, is to live amongst the baying of animals."
The scholars were enlightened, and immediately looked for new houses farther from the town center.
