Xiao Naodai Was furious at having lost face due to his debate with the Master, and craftily asked him when the last time he had touched a rice paddy was.
The Master, piercing through his motivations, replied: “I thank you for your concern Master Xiao, but I already had a pleasant jog through the paddies last night, and worked in my garden all morning, as is proper (禮). But I worry for you- when was the last time you put down your scrolls and touched rice?”
Xiao Naodai left in silence, as he touched neither rice, nor bamboo, nor susuki grass in a fortnight.
